apparently my family is out of good health karma. turns out my dad did in fact rupture his achilles tendon, which requires surgery and then three months in a cast. really sucks for him, since he loves hiking. second surgery for our family in a week, too. my mom is going to be really tired of nursing groggy post-anesthesia family members (especially since my dad is a horrible patient...)
