sadie_cocopuffit makes me really happy to live in a household where, if you leave an unfamiliar cd lying around, someone will be curious enough to put it on and listen to it. i can't wait for the new vienna album to come out so i can leave that lying around...
i'm worried i'm not in the right math class, though. i honestly don't know what these people have been doing for the last three semesters, especially since two of them were algebra and one was analysis, because i'm looking through the text he handed out and it's looking fairly familiar for the most part - as in, familiar from first semester linear algebra. clearly things are taught in a different order here. though, for all that math is universal, i'm having trouble linking up the correct english and french vocab words. "linearly independent" becomes quite simply "libre," it seems. on the other hand, i have no idea what "deux à deux distincts" is supposed to mean. and since it's appearing in the "let's suppose" parts of definitions, i'm gathering it's something basic that is going to be problematic if i don't get a handle on it. assuming i stay in this class. after dinner will be time to settle down with my course text and try to find where it stops being familiar, i guess. fun fun.
in other mathy news (how i have missed math - even if a lot of the actual problems were bypassing my brain as i struggled to catch the french, it was nice just to be attempting to write "f" five different ways to distinguish the function from the set from the blah blah blah, although french handwriting doesn't help there), i think i'm applying for the topology project at the cornell summer reu program. which means, you know, i should get a move on the application. fortunately (for me - not sure how i feel about affirmative action in principle, but i'm not going to stand on principle in this case), i think the sheer fact of being a girl gives me an edge. then i have to go figure out my backup programs. i would so much rather just be lazy. oh well.
